‘The Flash’ Recap Season 8 Episode 19 [Spoiler] Die, Thawne returns

Below contains spoilers from the June 22 episode of Sparkle.

Back in December, at the finale of the fourth episode of “Armageddon,” viewers saw Tom Kavanaugh’s trick Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash slip into the STAR Labs Time Vault. And they declare ominously, “No one is using time against me!”

In turn, Kavanaugh told TVLine at the time that his evil ego likes to restrain himself, when he reveals diabolical plots.

Well, the time bomb for the evil speed driver has exploded bubble in SparkleThe penultimate episode of Season 8, when it was a staggering chain of events that we wouldn’t dare try to summarize here 1) saw Thawne in a withered corpse, 2) set Eris in Barry’s lightning streak of fire, as it turns out she, and not Eobard of Fast Track Labs, It was a “sacrifice” to be made, and 3) Matt Letscher Eobard rips his head off to reveal that Tom Cavanag’s copy was hidden inside, and again the speed.

yes. It was a lot.

TVLine happily jumped on the phone with Cavanagh to at least try to deconstruct this week’s wild/fatal events, and learn what that means for Reverse-Flash’s end-of-season plan.

Flash 8x19 ThawneTVLINE | So, I just finished watching this week’s episode… Tom, what the hell did you just watch?
I don’t know because I haven’t seen him; I honestly don’t know what’s in it. I mean, I know I shot it, but we shot like a whole bunch in a row, so I’m not quite sure what picture I saw. But if you like it, that’s fine!

TVLINE | Well, to jog your memory, Matt Letcher peeled his skull in half, and it came out.
Good. This is a good thing!

TVLINE | It is a very annoying visual. You will have to tune in and see it.
You know, I direct a bunch of, like, flash And the Superman and Louisand you can write [the words] On the page, right, you’re like, “Yeah, easy!” But then, you’re like, ‘Wait, how exactly are we shooting this??’ You have to do like freeze frame, capture motion, or have all these different tools at your disposal. There were a lot of technical aspects to this scene, so I know that.

TVLINE | Immediately after watching this I wrapped up episode 4 of this season where I was in the Time vault and Twain said in a low voice, “No one uses time against I! “ Are we witnessing the height of that threat?
You can write this better than I can tell, because that’s a great way to put it. It really is. I did well.

TVLINE | The last time you and I talked, I noticed Thawne likes to “move” by himself.
And that’s exactly what I’ve been driving at, because at the time we talked, you don’t want to get the audience ahead of you and you don’t want to say too much. But for people who are really into the show in the sense that you are, you kind of want them to be like, ‘Look, I’m not bothering you. These he is It will pay off.”

Flash 8x19TVLINE | there Many To process out of this loop. Would there be some sort of bragging summary from Thawne à la “That’s all been going on for the last six months and you didn’t realize it was part of my long game”? Even something as modern as when negative static force introduces you quickly into an ARGUS cell. At that moment, we thought, “Oh, Tom Kavanaugh character very dead now.”
I think it would be a real surprise to me if they looked at any deaths by any character I’ve ever played – all 20 of them! – And I thought, “That’s it for this guy” in particular, the reverse flash. What is Batman without the Joker?

TVLINE | Is it safe to say that everything went according to Thawne’s plan?
This is a great way to put it. I think we’ve said a variation of that line over and over over the years, about how it’s always 20 steps ahead, always 40 steps ahead, and that’s a good example of Thawne being number One of the steps before Team Flash.

TVLINE | There was a moment at the end of this week’s episode that really did Not I understand, because I was watching a rough clip and the visual effects were temporary. Eris, after death, transforms into a cloud of particles that floats in Matt Letcher, before he turns to you. Do you know what was going on there?
Do I know what was going on? surely. yes. I know what was going on. I’m not going say You because I have WB snipers on the roof around me. Everything is like I said, it’s 10 steps ahead and it’s all planned out and it makes sense when you see the next episode.

flash iris diesTVLINE | How worried should we be for Eris?
At first, I was like, “How do you do the show without Iris?” But Carlos Valdez also felt like the heart and soul of the show…. As long as the numbers are there, I think the show will go on. so me guess You may be worried about Eris, but that is up to the individual’s anxiety scale.

TVLINE | Over the years and especially when stepping down as a series regular, I said so when The flash To its end, you’ll be back because we must have the ultimate Batman/Joker showdown, Flash/Reverse Flash. This is it who – whichdespite the offer expired renewal?
I do not think so. I think it’s up to Greg Berlanti and the people at Warner Bros. I wasn’t invited to say [it must end with] Flash / reverse flash. That’s exactly what Grant and I always talked about, and Berlanti talked about, because it makes sense. The other thing is that if the show goes on for another 20 years because Gustin keeps doing it, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to have a few hundred people facing each other. I think a lot will be determined by the success of the show and how many seasons they have, how many stories they have to keep telling.

TVLINE | Now that Thawne has regained his speed, does he have a plan?
Thawne always has a plan.

TVLINE | Knowing that things aren’t always filmed on the same day, I’m curious if you and Matt Letcher just hang out on set? You are You have Joint custody of this character for eight years.
Greg Berlanti has hired Matt and I a few times, we’ve done it Eli Stone together…. By Berlanti, Matt and I seem to have passed over and over again, which is so funny because we wore grunge clothes, we wore good suits, we wore an old wardrobe, and then it was like, ‘Oh, yeah, we’re super suits in this suit! He’s talented and charming, and it’s always a pleasure that those paths cross. We have to hang out on this one, and again, I say, it’s always great to see.
